Institutional Online Subscription includes: Access to full text of all articles from 1916 to present, current and future tables of contents, abstracts and full text searching. Access is provided to computers within a particular set of internet IP addresses. If your institution has authentification from off-campus computers, you will be able to access the online version of The JI through your institution's sign-in procedures.

Types of Institutional Online Subscriptions:
  1. Single Site. The single site license includes IP addresses for one geographical location in one city that is administered by one organization. A single site subscription consists of a print version as well as the online version of The JI.
  2. Multi-Site. Any institution that does not qualify for a single site license must purchase a multi-site license. Institutions that are classified as multi-site may include (a) an institution whose registered IP addresses encompass more than one geographic site (e.g., a university campus that administers a branch campus in a different city or suburb); (b) an institution located on a host site that has a separate administration (e.g., a government laboratory located on a university campus). A multi-site subscription consists of the online-only version of The JI. Access is available at all of an organization's sites.

How Institutional Online Access Works: Institutional access is easy and convenient! There are no usernames or passwords to remember and there is currently no limit on the number of readers from an institution who may access the online version of The JI simultaneously. If a computer requesting access to The JI is within the list of internet IP addresses provided by a subscribing institution, all those services enabled for institutional readers are immediately available.

How to Identify that Access is Received through an Institutional Subscription: If an institution has a subscription, there is immediate access to all content on the online version of The JI. A banner located at the top of the page will confirm that access is available from the subscribing institution.

Online Activation Procedures:

After you receive a customer confirmation letter that states your customer number and the estimated date that access will be available, you may activate your subscription. Make sure that you know the IP address(es) for your institution. If you need assistance in finding the applicable IP address(es), contact your computer services department. For single site licenses, please note that the IP address must be for one geographical site in one city that is administered by one organization. If you are unsure whether your organization qualifies as a single site, contact the Content Licensing Manager at mgr.subs@aai.org.

After verifying you have the correct IP address(es), click on the link:

ACTIVATE YOUR ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION

This link will bring up the online agreement for institutions. Read the terms and conditions of the agreement, fill out the requested information and check the "I Agree" box at the bottom. Your institution will not be able to access the online journal without agreeing to the terms and conditions.

After the "I Agree" link is checked, a sign-in box will appear. Enter the customer number found in the customer confirmation letter and click the "Submit" button.

Fill out the subsequent form requesting "Subscribing Institution Information", and "Administrator Contact Information". Enter a user name and password that will only be used for administration purposes. Please do not share this information with anyone. (If you forget your user name and/or your password, click here.)

Then click the 'SEND FORM' button.

When you click 'Send Form' you will move on to Part II of the activation process, or you will be notified of any errors.

Part II of the activation process involves entering your institution's IP ranges. Click here for an explanation of IP ranges and formats.

PART II: Entering your Institution's IP Address(es).
Three boxes will appear for input:
  1. Name: This is the name of an IP range
  2. Included IP's: This is the IP range(s) for your institution
  3. Excluded IP's: This box is for any excluded address(es) within the range in the "Included IP" box that are not applicable to the institution signing the license.
After filling in the applicable boxes, click on "Save".

THE ACTIVATION PROCESS IS THEN COMPLETE.

Managing Your Institutional Subscription

Troubleshooting Access Issues:

No Access: If you are an institutional subscriber and are not able to access the online version of The JI (the prompt for username and password will appear), then the IP address for your institution’s computer is not recognized by our computer. This failure may be caused by one of four things:

  1. Your institution has purchased a print-only subscription. Notify your library that you would like access to the online version of The JI, and encourage your librarian to purchase a subscription with online access.
  2. The institutional online subscription has not yet been activated. You may click here to activate.
  3. All needed IP addresses for the institution have not been entered in the online account.
  4. Your institution's firewall is preventing access.

How to Restore Access:

Notify your institution's librarian about the problem. Let the librarian know the IP address of the computer you are using. Institutional account administrators must first check the online account to ensure that the IP address in question is included. If the IP address(es) look correct, send us Feedback from the computer that is not able to access the material.
