On the cover: Cytokine-induced HIF-1α localizes to astrocytic nuclei. Primary human astrocytes treated with 10 ng/ml IL-1β+IFN-γ for 24 h were immunostained for hypoxia-inducible factor-α (HIF-1α, red) and the astrocyte marker GFAP (green). Nuclei were stained with DAPI (blue). Cytokine-induced HIF-1α localized to astrocytic nuclei, suggesting that its up-regulation triggered formation of active HIF-1 complexes. Argaw, A. T., Y. Zhang, B. J. Snyder, M.-L. Zhao, N. Kopp, S. C. Lee, C. S. Raine, C. F. Brosnan, and G. R. John. 2006. IL-1β regulates blood-brain barrier permeability via reactivation of the hypoxia-angiogenesis program. J. Immunol. 177: 5574–5584.
