On the cover: In normal skin, microorganisms stimulate keratinocytes to produce antimicrobial molecules such as human
defensin (HBD)-2, HBD-3, and NO. In atopic skin, IL-4 and IL-13 inhibit production of HBD-2, HBD-3, and NO leading to lower killing activity against microorganisms. These events may allow microbes to grow in the Th2 environment of AD skin. Nomura et al. Cytokine milieu of atopic dermatitis, as compared to psoriasis, skin prevents induction of innate immune response genes. J. Immunol. 171:3262.
