Cluster Analysis of the Gene Expression Profile of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. All 518 differentially expressed genes were clustered according to the geometric mean expression levels of the 6 donors in the CD4+ and CD8+ T cells at the early and late activation timepoints, using a Pearson Correlation k-means clustering algorithm in GeneSpring. Genes are coloured according to the mean expression level in the CD4+ T cell Early Activation timepoint. A small number of highly expressed genes have been omitted from the display for clarity.

Differentially Expressed Early-Activation Genes. PBMC were stimulated for 6 days with live M. tuberculosis, and then re-stimulated with autologous macrophages infected with fresh M. tuberculosis for a further 16 hours. Gene expression levels in isolated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were compared by cDNA-array hybridisation, and those genes which were differentially expressed by at least 1.3-fold (P<0.05, n=6) are shown. 1Not yet all approved by the HUGO gene nomenclature committee 2Genbank accession number, where no reference sequence exists 3After normalisation, where the median expression level of genes for each array was normalised to 1

Differentially Expressed Late-Activation Genes. PBMC were stimulated for 7 days with live M. tuberculosis. Gene expression levels in isolated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were compared by cDNA-array hybridisation, and those genes which were differentially expressed by at least 1.3-fold (P<0.05, n=6) are shown. 1Not yet all approved by HUGO gene nomenclature committee 2Genbank accession number, where no reference sequence exists 3After normalisation, where the median expression level of genes for each array was normalised to 1

Cluster analysis of Gene Expression Profiles. All 518 differentially expressed genes were subjected to a Pearson correlation k-means clustering algorithm. The table shows the genes lying within the 6 resultant clusters, which reflect the expression pattern.
