Changes continue to take place in The Journal of Immunology. I think it appropriate to share with you some recent developments.
On-Line Publication. Beginning in January 1998, The Journal of Immunology will be available on-line. The January 1 and the January 15 issues will be available mid-month, and subsequent issues will be posted on the date The Journal is mailed. Full-text and illustrations of all articles will be accessible after mid-January to all subscribers of The Journal through The Journal Home Page on the World Wide Web [http://www.jimmunol.org]. Access instructions for subscribers will be provided. The Tables of Contents and the Abstracts of all articles will continue to be available to everyone. Other journals have adopted price structures which provide different rates for on-line and print versions. However, the decision was made by the Council of the American Association of Immunologists to have one subscription price that includes both print and on-line versions of The Journal of Immunology. Subscription rates have been increased modestly to cover the increased costs of both print and on-line publishing. We think that you will appreciate the on-line features that we have included initially, and additional enhancements are planned in the coming months. We welcome your comments and reactions. An address for comments and suggestions is provided on The Journal Home Page, or send your comments directly to me at .
Manuscript Page Limit. As you may have noted, The Journal of Immunology published more papers (and even more pages) last year. This is a mixed blessing; we are grateful that The Journal is perceived as an important place to publish good science. However, there are physical and financial constraints to the size of The Journal. The length of an "average" paper is now in excess of eight pages. The Publications Committee of the American Association of Immunologists has approved a limit of eight pages for full-length articles. The Instructions to Authors published in this issue ofThe Journal includes a method for estimating the published length of manuscripts. It is expected that manuscripts received after January 15, 1998, will conform to this page limitation. Authors will benefit in two ways from this limitation: both page and reprint charges will be less. Suggestions for optimal size of illustrations also are provided in the Instructions to Authors. We are working closely with the publisher of The Journal to reduce the amount of empty space within articles. You can help by providing optimal figure designs.
Electronic Transmission of Manuscript Reviews. After extensive trials, first with Cutting Edge manuscripts and more recently with full-length manuscripts, we are finalizing the process for electronic transmission of manuscript reviews. This will be both efficient and cost-effective. We also have implemented a new "manuscript tracking system" which provides critical information about where particular manuscripts are in the review process. This system also enables us to follow both the quality and timeliness of performance of all participants in this process. We are using a flexible database management system; additional features can be added with relative ease, and obsolete functions can be deleted.
Conflicts of Interest and Other Ethical Issues. The statement of Editorial Policies and Practices outlines the general procedures followed by The Journal. However, some issues seem not to have been dealt with in sufficient detail. A subcommittee of the Publications Committee of the American Association of Immunologists is developing more specific definitions of conflicts of interest and more explicit procedures for dealing with allegations of misconduct. These will be incorporated in the Policy Statement when they have been approved.
