Synthesis of Human Immunoglobulins in Germinal Centers of Lymphoid Organs

Pierre Burtin and Denise Buffe

From the Institut de Recherches Scientifiques sur le Cancer, 94 Villejuif, France

Abstract

Fluorescein and rhodamine labeled monospecific antibodies to IgG, IgA and IgM immunoglobulins and to K and {lambda} light chains were used to investigate their localization in lymphoid follicles of human tonsils, spleens and lymph nodes. With few exceptions, only one immunoglobulin, and one light chain was detected in individual germinal centers. These findings support the hypothesis that at a given time, only one immunoglobulin, and one type of light chain is synthesized by cells in an individual germinal center.
