Adsorption to Glass and Specific Antibody Inhibition of Iodine125 Labeled Influenza Virus1

Robert D. Boche and J. J. Quilligan, Jr.

From the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and the Department of Pediatrics, Virus Laboratory, Los Angeles (California) County General Hospital

Abstract

1. Purified and concentrated influenza and adenovirus 6 have been labeled with iodine-125. Chemical analysis indicates nonuniform distribution of the label among several influenza virus fractions, the largest amount being found in phospholipid and least in ribonucleic acid.
2. The viruses were shown to adsorb firmly to glass, Cab-o-Sil, paraffin and silicone coated glass in varying amounts.
3. Distinct differences in adsorption on paraffin were observed between influenza and adenovirus 6.
4. The adsorption of influenza on glass is specifically inhibited by immune serum, allowing typing of viruses and sera without cells.
