M and
G Guinea Pig Antibodies to Bacteriophage
1741
From the Irvington House Institute and Department of Medicine, New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York
Abstract
Avidity of guinea pig antibodies to bacteriophage
X 174 was studied by means of the decision-tube and reactivation methods of Jerne and Avegno. The avidity of both
M and
G antibodies increased with time after immunization.
M antibody obtained 1 week after immunization usually had a higher avidity than
G antibody obtained 2 weeks after immunization. The possibility that the relatively high avidity of
M antibody is caused by multiple binding between a single phage particle and one
M antibody molecule is discussed.
