Quantitative Semi-Micro Hemagglutination1

A Sensitive Assay Dependent upon Cellular Dissociation and Migration in Capillary Tubes

Charles D. Severson and John S. Thompson

From the Department of Medicine, The University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois

Abstract

A relatively inexpensive procedure for the quantitative assay of serum agglutinins is proposed. It offers simplicity and convenience in operation and sensitivity and reproducibility in results. The technique is based on the migration of cells down the inclined trough of a sealed micro-hematocrit tube. This system appears to depend upon the rate of cellular detachment from a centrifuged pellet by the dissociative force of gravity.
