The Opsonic Effect of Complement on the Phagocytosis of {gamma}-Globulin-Coated Bentonite Particles1

Michael W. Rytel2 and Gene H. Stollerman

From the Samuel J. Sackett Research Laboratory and the Department of Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois

Abstract

Evidence has been presented which indicates that opsonization of {gamma}-globulin-coated bentonite is diminished in sera lacking C'1, C'2 and C'4, but not in sera lacking C'3. These observations provide additional evidence for the similarity of {gamma}-globulin-coated particles and specific antigen-antibody complexes in their interactions with the complement system.
