The Passive Transfer to Normal Dogs of Skin Reactivity, Asthma and Anaphylaxis from a Dog with Spontaneous Ragweed Pollen Hypersensitivity1

Roy Patterson and Dale B. Sparks

Allergy Unit, Department of Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois

Abstract

The spontaneous ragweed pollen hypersensitivity disease of a dog has been passively transferred to normal dogs. Wheal and erythema type skin reactivity, asthma and anaphylaxis were transferred by a heat labile serum factor. Extravasation of Evans blue dye in reactive sites in passively sensitized skin sites increased visibility of the Prausnitz-Küstner reactions. Postmortem examination of dogs dying of anaphylaxis showed marked changes in the liver and intestines.
