A Study of the Antibodies in Guinea Pigs Infected with Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus

B. Cartwright

Research Institute (Animal Virus Diseases), Pirbright, Surrey, England

Abstract

1. Antiserum to the virus of foot-and-mouth disease appears to contain at least two antibodies.
2. The purified 25-mµ infective component of the virus has sites capable of combining with each antibody, whereas the noninfective 7-mµ component combines with one antibody only.
3. The complement-fixing activity of an antiserum is the sum of two separate antibody activities to the 7-mµ and 25-mµ viral components and is not related in a simple way to the virus-neutralizing activity of the serum.
4. The ratio of the complement-fixing activities of the antibodies to the 7 mµ and 25 mµ component of the virus is greater when adjuvant is used with the hyperimmunizing dose.
