The Opsonization of Bentonite Particles by {gamma}-Globulin1

Elizabeth V. Potter2 and Gene H. Stollerman

From the Samuel J. Sackett Research Laboratory and the Department of Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois

Abstract

Direct adsorption of human {gamma}-globulin to bentonite resulted in marked enhancement of phagocytosis of the particles by human leukocytes in vitro.

The opsonic activity of {gamma}-globulin was affected by several factors: physical alteration due to purification procedures, heterogeneity, degree of aggregation and capacity to fix complement.

Attempts to minimize these factors did not prevent opsonization. Phagocytosis was still enhanced when the {gamma}-globulin was separated from individual sera by electroconvection, promptly adsorbed to bentonite and suspended in the bloods of the autologous donors.
