Enhanced Immunological Sensitization of Mice by the Simultaneous Injection of Antigen and Specific Antiserum

I. EFFECT OF VARYING THE AMOUNT OF ANTIGEN USED RELATIVE TO THE ANTISERUM1

Geronimo Terres2 and William Wolins

From the Medical Research Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York

Abstract

1. Mice injected intravenously with BSA and rabbit anti-BSA serum in antigen excess show an accelerated immune response to the antigen.
2. This immune response is related to the ratio of BSA to anti-BSA used in the initial injection. The optimal combination of BSA and anti-BSA is in slight antigen excess.
3. Anaphylactic sensitization parallels the accelerated immune response in time of onset.
4. This response to BSA is not related to bacterial contamination.
