The Effect of Zymosan on the Phagocytosis of Foreign Erythrocytes1

John L. Cutler2

New England Institute for Medical Research, Ridgefield, Connecticut

Abstract

1. The disappearance of sheep erythrocytes in the rat and in the rabbit has been shown to be a rapid exponential function attributable to phagocytosis.
2. Following this initial erythrophagocytosis hemoglobin is released back into the circulation, reflecting the catabolic function of the reticuloendothelial system.
3. Zymosan causes an increased rate of removal of erythrocytes but does not alter the disappearance rate of foreign albumin.
4. The relationship of phagocytosis to antibody production and the fact that enhanced antibody formation in Zymosan-treated animals cannot be attributed to more efficient phagocytosis are discussed.
