Abstract

1. A technique to introduce phase variations of Shigella flexneri by means of antiserum was established studying various S. flexneri strains.
2. The pathways of the antigenic degradation of S. flexneri were traced using this method, and the resulting variations were discussed in relation to classification of S. flexneri species.
