From the Plum Island Animal Disease Laboratory, Animal Disease and Parasite Research Division, Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Greenport, L. I., New York

Abstract

1. Anti-foot-and-mouth disease guinea pig serum was subjected to paper electrophoretic analyses using horizontal and vertical continuous-flow techniques.
2. Analyses of whole immune sera for protein composition revealed no significant differences when compared with normal sera.
3. No relationship was demonstrated between protein composition, virus-neutralizing and complement-fixing antibody titers.
4. In fractions of sera tested for virus-neutralizing antibody activity, the beta- and {gamma}-globulins were capable of neutralizing all of the virus infectivity.
5. Complement-fixing activity was found only in the {gamma}-globulin fraction of highest mobility.
6. Evidence is presented that the complement-fixing and virus-neutralizing antibodies are two distinct antibodies.
