Studies of the Inactivation of Phage by the Properdin System

II. Quantitative assay of phage-neutralizing activity

From the Division of Laboratories and Research, New York State Department of Health, Albany, and the Department of Microbiology, Albany Medical College

Abstract

Details are given of a method for measuring the neutralizing activity of human serum using bacteriophage as an indicator. The technique measures activity in terms of the 50% neutralizing unit and yields precise and reproducible results. Evidence is presented which suggests that the phage-neutralizing activity might be a reflection of properdin levels.
