Cross Reactions of Polyglucoses in Antipneumococcal Sera

Abstract

1. A synthetic polyglucose fraction is shown to precipitate more antibody nitrogen from Types II, IX, XII, XX, and XXII antipneumococcal horse sera than do various glycogens, amylopectins, and other natural polyglucoses. Quantitative data are given.
2. Various features of these cross reactions and the compositions of certain of the precipitates are discussed.
3. Use is made of the action of amylase on glycogen-antibody precipitates for the partial purification and concentration of cross-reactive antibody.
4. Preliminary results are given with an analytical method which appears to provide a new criterion of homogeneity for carbohydrates composed of a single sugar or polysaccharides not fractionated by a single precipitation with an antiserum.
