The Specificity of the Agglutination-Reaction with Autoclaved Hemolytic Streptococci¹ and the Role of the Group-Specific Polysaccharide in the Reaction^,2

Abstract

1) Thulin's agglutinative reaction with autoclaved hemolytic streptococcus was examined for its specificity by testing various strains of cocci against grouping and typing sera and patients' sera. The evidence suggested that this particular reaction was specific for hemolytic streptococcus as a group.

2) Agglutinin-absorption with autoclaved hemolytic streptococcus and precipitin-absorption with the group-specific polysaccharide of the group A hemolytic streptococcus were done on streptococcal grouping and typing sera and patients' sera. The results indicate that the group-specific polysaccharide played an important role in rendering the test specific for hemolytic streptococcus.
