An Attempt to Produce Bacterial Agglutinins in Vitro

L. B. Fastier

From the Department of Microbiological Research of the New Zealand Medical Research Council, University of Otago Medical School, Dunedin, New Zealand

Abstract

Possible roles for the individual cell-components of the reticulo-endothelial system in the synthesis of antibodies have been investigated in vitro.

No soluble agglutinogen was detected in the fluids surrounding phagocytic cells containing ingested bacteria.

No antibody was detected in the fluids resulting from the addition of lymphocytes and macrophages to phagocytes containing ingested bacteria. Neither was any soluble agglutinogen detected in the latter fluids.
