Abstract
- 1. The antiviral activity of various enzyme inhibitors was tested on psittacosis virus in vitro. Iodoacetamide, p-chloromercuribenzoate, hydroquinone, proflavine, atabrine, and mercuric chloride markedly reduced the activity of psittacosis virus as measured by egg titrations.
- 2. Glutathione and cysteine were shown to antagonize the effect of p-chloromercuribenzoate on psittacosis virus, resulting in resumption of virus activity.
- 3. Growth of psittacosis virus in tissue culture was inhibited after exposure of the tissue medium to o-iodosobenzoate or hydroquinone.
- 4. The significance of these findings in relation to the enzymic make-up and requirements of psittacosis virus is discussed.
