The Prolonged Viability of Sporozoites of Plasmodium Gallinaceum in Extracts of Washed Chicken Erythrocytes

Abstract

Sporozoites of P. gallinaceum suspended in a diluent consisting of a saline extract of washed chicken erythrocytes will survive for as long as 72 hours at room temperature (25 C-26 C) and with little loss of infectivity for at least 24 hours.

The addition of penicillin to the extract has been found to have no adverse effect on the sporozoite and may be used to reduce the danger of bacterial contamination.

Evidence is presented which indicates that mosquito tissues when mixed with sporozoites reduce the infectivity of the latter.
