A Note on Enzyme-Purified Antitoxin and Anaphylaxis in Guinea Pigs

P. Agerholm Christensen and J. E. Kerrich

South African Institute for Medical Research, Johannesburg and University of the Witwatersrand

Abstract

1. It has been confirmed that guinea pigs actively sensitized to pepsin-treated serum are sensitive to normal horse serum.
2. It has been confirmed that guinea pigs sensitized to normal horse serum are less easily shocked by pepsin-treated antitoxin than by the unaltered antigen.
3. It has been confirmed that guinea pigs sensitized to pepsin-treated antitoxin can be shocked by the same antigen.
4. It has been shown that pepsin-treated antitoxin is more effective in eliciting anaphylactic shock in guinea pigs sensitized to pepsin-treated antitoxin than in guinea pigs sensitized to normal horse serum. This suggests that the antitoxin has acquired a new specificity, and the possibility of serum reactions in persons receiving enzyme-purified serum for the second time is emphasized.
5. The validity of the results obtained has been assessed statistically.
