The Action of Antimony and Some Other Bacteriostatic Substances on Donovania Granulomatis Isolated in the Chick Embryo

W. I. B. Beveridge

From The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Melbourne

Abstract

Two strains of Donovania granulomatis isolated in the yolk-sac were inhibited by 1:20,000,000 to 1:50,000,000 trivalent antimony (tartar emetic, Anthiomaline, or Fouadin). Ten times as much pentavalent antimony (Neostam or Sodium Stibogluconate) was required to produce the same effect.

The following information was obtained about the mode of action of antimony on this organism: (a) it is independent of the presence of living cells, (b) it is bacteriostatic, not bactericidal, (c) it is interfered with by thioglycollic acid or ascorbic acid.
