Book Review

Abstract

The Bacterial Cell. In Its Relation to Problems of Virulence, Immunity and Chemotherapy. RENÉ J. DUBOS. With an Addendum by C. F. ROBINOW. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Price, $5.00.

When—as is the case with Dubos's "Bacterial Cell"—a presentation of a fundamental problem is organized by an independent mind well versed in general science and particularly in chemistry and comparative physiology, when—in place of conventional assumptions and textbook opinions—it is based on firsthand experience and original reports, and when by rare good fortune it is written in a style that unites limpidity with an austere grace and favored by a flair for happy formulations, then it is a pleasure indeed to review such a book.

After an introductory chapter in which an exposition of the complexity of the problem is given, various disciplines and techniques are searched one after the other for pertinent information.
