Experiments Upon the Production of Antihuman Hemolysin with Special Reference to Immunization with Erythrocytes Sensitized with Heated Serum

Abstract

1. Immunization of rabbits with unwashed and washed human erythrocytes by intravenous injection every five days, produced similar results in influence upon body weight, mortality, hemagglutinin and hemolysin production.
2. Exposure of human erythrocytes to antihuman serum diluted 1:10 and heated at 70° to 80°C., reduces susceptibility to agglutination and increases susceptibility to hemolysis; immunization of rabbits with these sensitized erythrocytes produced results similar to those observed with plain washed corpuscles.
3. Stromata of human erythrocytes injected intravenously into rabbits may prove fatal; solutions of erythrocytes in distilled water largely free of stromata (shadow corpuscles) were better borne.
