Protection of the Developing Chick Embryo with Specific Serum Against Infection with Shigella Paradysenteriae (Flexner)

A. J. Weil and J. A. McFarlane

From the Lederle Laboratories, Inc., Pearl River, N. Y.

Abstract

1. The developing chick embryo is a convenient laboratory animal for the study of passive protection against Shigella paradysenteriæ (Flexner).
2. The immunity depends predominantly on the antibodies against the antigens that determine the type.
3. The implications of these observations upon the question of active (or passive) protection of man against Flexner infection are discussed.
