Immunizing Potency in Man of a Purified Antigenic Material Isolated from Eberthella Typhosa

Abstract

1. A purified antigenic material isolated from E. typhosa cultured in a synthetic medium in total dosage of 0.1 mg administered by subcutaneous injection in man has been demonstrated to produce mouse-protective antibody in greater amounts than 2.5 ml of two standard bacterial vaccines. This response was attained with less local and constitutional reactions than those following the use of the bacterial vaccines.
2. The intracutaneous administration of bacterial vaccines was found less effective than the subcutaneous route.
3. Certain advantages of this purified antigen are discussed.
