A Comparison of Antibody Production by Rabbits Following Injection of Pneumococcus Vaccines Heated at 60° or Autoclaved

Ernest G. Stillman

From the Hospital of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York

Abstract

1. Autoclaving of pneumococcus vaccines at 10 lbs pressure so alters the capsular antigen that it does not stimulate the development of type-specific agglutinins in rabbits as well as when heated at 60°.
2. The degree of alteration varies with the type of pneumococcus. The difference is slight in types I and II vaccines, and most marked with type III vaccines.
