Preparation of Protein-Free Scarlatinal Toxin

Walter L. Koerber and William Edward Bunney

E. R. Squibb & Sons, Biological Laboratories, New Brunswick, New Jersey

Abstract

1. A proteose-peptone-free medium is described which permits the production of scarlatinal toxin with a potency of 40,000 to 150,000 STD/ml using NY-5 and Dick I–IV strains of hemolytic streptococcus.
2. Crude toxins prepared on this medium can be concentrated and purified by salt-precipitation and dialysis to yield a protein-free antigenic toxin.
