The Occurrence of Salmonella O-Antigens in Coliform Organisms

F. Schiff1, S. Bornstein and I. Saphra

From the Bacteriological and Serological Laboratories, Beth Israel Hospital, New York City2

Abstract

Five cultures of coliform organisms are described which contain Salmonella antigens. The flagellar antigens of these bacteria have no relationship to Salmonella.

One O-antigen was found to have the same formula as that of S. onderstepoort. Once the complete O-antigen of S. worthington, and in four cases components of the O-antigens of S. worthington, S. poona and the O-antigen I were found. In four strains there were residual non-Salmonella antigenic components.
