The Electrophoretic Analysis of Tetanal Antitoxic Horse-Sera

J. van der Scheer, Ralph W. G. Wyckoff and Frank H. Clarke

Lederle Laboratories, Inc., Pearl River, N. Y.

Abstract

Electrophoretic analyses have been made of the sera of several horses hyperimmunized against tetanal toxin. Mobility measurements show that each of these sera contains a large new T-component having u = ca –2.0 x 10–5 cm2 sec–1 volt–1. The serum of one horse was studied at various stages of the hyper-immunizing process; this new T-peak became prominent when a large amount of antitoxin appeared in the serum. In spite of this obvious association of antitoxic activity with T, the areas under the T-peaks cannot be taken as proportional to the measured antitoxic activity.
