Abstract
Determinations of heterologous (group-specific) and total (type-specific plus group-specific) agglutinin-nitrogen have been made on concentrates of antipneumococcic rabbit-serum for types I, II, III, IV, V, VII, VIII and XIV. These concentrates had previously been analyzed for type-specific precipitin-nitrogen.
Under the conditions employed here, of the total agglutinin, about 86 per cent is accounted for by type-specific precipitin, and about 93 per cent by precipitin plus heterologous agglutinin. Thus the conclusions of Heidelberger and coworkers as to the identity of type-specific agglutinin and precipitin are confirmed and extended.
Using six of the types mentioned, mouse protective assays on the concentrates after removal of the precipitin showed that only 3.1 per cent or less of the protective power remained, indicating identity of precipitin and protective antibody.
The type-specific polysaccharides used in the quantitative precipitative reaction were not significantly degraded.
