Studies on in Vitro Anaphylaxis and Release of an Active Non-Histamine Material from Sensitized Guinea Pig Lung1

Dan H. Campbell and Paul A. Nicoll

Departments of Bacteriology and Parasitology, and Physiology, University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois

Abstract

The foregoing experiments show:

1. That rat uteri, which are unaffected by ordinary doses of histamine, respond to some substance released by sensitized guinea-pig lung-tissue during anaphylactic shock.
2. That sensitized circular and longitudinal uterine muscle from pregnant guinea pigs readily shows anaphylaxis and that the latter are just as sensitive and show a more severe type of reaction than virgin uterine muscle.
3. That tissues, particularly intestinal, taken from 7 to 8 week foetuses of sensitized mothers, show a hypersensitive condition.
