The Antigenic Property of Insulin

P. Wasserman, R. H. Broh-Kahn1 and I. Arthur Mirsky

The May Institute for Medical Research of the Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio

Abstract

1. Evidence is presented that insulin is antigenic, as shown by the fact that sera from sensitized rabbits may give positive complement-fixation.
2. Sufficient foreign protein is present in commercially prepared insulin to allow sensitization of a rabbit to that protein by repeated injections of the insulin.
3. Antibodies produced against insulin do not act as anti-hormones.
