Abstract
The immune state engendered in rabbits by the injection of formalinized suspensions of the elementary bodies of vaccinia has been found to be equal that resulting from infection with the active virus, when the immune states are compared on the basis of the neutralizing qualities of the serum and the ability to neutralize virus injected into the skin. Complement-fixing antibodies, however, have been found in somewhat lower titer in the serum of animals which received inactivated virus than in those infected with active virus. Doses of formalinized suspensions of elementary bodies in the order of milligrams were found to be necessary for effecting immunization of this degree.
