Abstract
The anaphylactic properties of the tobacco mosaic virus protein and the hemocyanin of Limulus polyphemus have been studied in sensitized guinea pigs in vivo and by means of the Schultz-Dale method.
The results demonstrate that the tobacco mosaic virus protein is anaphylactogenic when tested in vivo, but in agreement with previously published data fails to cause smooth muscle contraction when tested in vitro.
The results of the experiments with the hemocyanin of Limulus polyphemus demonstrate that this protein is anaphylactogenic when tested by either of the above methods.
