Abstract
Complement-fixation takes place in a system containing the purified specific carbohydrate of H. influenzae Type b in the presence of immune rabbit serum of the homologous type. In contrast to the positive results in the presence of immune rabbit serum, there is no fixation of complement in a similar system containing the same carbohydrate in the presence of immune horse serum. Similar results were obtained with suspensions of encapsulated H. influenzae providing that the structural integrity of the capsules was maintained throughout the tests.
