The Production of Antibodies for Cypridina Luciferase and Luciferin in the Body of a Rabbit

Abstract

An antiluciferase can be produced in the blood of rabbits by repeated injection of luciferase solution prepared from the luminous ostracod crustacean, Cypridina hilgendorfii. The antiluciferase is not destroyed by a temperature of 56 or 61° for thirty minutes but is destroyed at 71° for thirty minutes and 95° for five minutes. No indication that complement is necessary for the action of antiluciferase was obtained.

No indication that antiluciferin can be produced in the blood of rabbits was obtained.

The results suggest that luciferase is a protein or associated with protein, whereas luciferin is not an antigenic protein.
