Abstract
Sheep erythrocytes sensitized with antibody and the first seven components of complement (EAC1-7) undergo rapid hemolysis in the presence of the eighth component of complement (C8) and a basic polypeptide (direct lytic factor, DLF) isolated from cobra venom which synergistically reacts with phospholipase A in hemolysis. EAC1-7 cells are not lysed by either C8 or DLF alone. DLF reacts after the reaction of C8 on EAC1-7 and not before it. These results suggest possible phospholipase activity in activated C8 molecules.
