Abstract
Group A streptococcal cell walls, after extraction by formamide, may be partially solubilized in aqueous 8 M urea. This soluble peptidoglycan is not immunogenic, but contains material which precipitates strongly with group A streptococcus polysaccharide antisera as well as with antipeptidoglycan antisera. This immunologic reactivity is due to a free N-acetyl-glucosamine grouping. Coupling urea-soluble peptidoglycan with bovine serum albumin makes it immunogenic on the rabbit. Antibodies produced are directed to the peptidic moiety of peptidoglycan.
