Abstract
Agents known to increase intracellular levels of cyclic 3'5' adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP), in a variety of tissues were examined for their effect on migration inhibitory factor (MIF)-induced inhibition of macrophage migration.
-Adrenergic agents (isoproterenol and epinephrine) and prostaglandins E1 and E2 consistently prevent MIF activity on macrophage migration. Aminophylline also prevents MIF activity. These observations suggest a possible role for cyclic AMP in modulating the biologic activity of MIF. The finding that dibutyryl cyclic AMP inhibits MIF activity supports this view.
