The Influence of Carriers on the Immune Response of Rabbits to the Synthetic Homopolymer Poly ({gamma}-2-N-Morpholinylethyl-l-Glutamamide) (Pameg)1

Abstract

Immunization intravenously (i.v.) of rabbits with soluble PAMEG, or PAMEG adsorbed to alum, carboxymethylcellulose, or insoluble acetylated bovine serum albumin produced little (0.05 mg antibody/ml serum) or no precipitating antibody against PAMEG. However, rabbits immunized with PAMEG coated onto a rough strain of Pneumococcus (R36A) produced significant levels of antibody directed against both PAMEG and the R strain carrier. After the second course immunization, the antiPAMEG response was as high as 16 mg antibody/ml serum, and some sera displayed restrictions in the {gamma} globulin region by cellulose acetate electrophoresis.
