Ontogenetic Development and Synthesis of Hemolytic C8 by Piglet Tissues1

From the Laboratories of the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology, University of Minnesota Hospitals, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55455

Abstract

Synthesis of hemolytic C8 was investigated in short-term tissue cultures with different tissues from adult and fetal pigs. Kidney, spleen, liver and lung tissues and very likely the intestine were found to be capable of synthesizing C8. Ontogenetically, the synthesis started in liver, lung and midgut at a very early stage of gestation. The presence of antimetabolites in the tissue culture media and lower incubation temperatures decreased the rate of synthesis markedly.
