In Vitro Immunity to TNP and Penicillin: Specific Inhibition with Hapten-Conjugated Isologous Red Cells1

David Naor2 and Robert Mishell

From the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, University of California, Berkeley, California

Abstract

Syngeneic mouse red cells conjugated with trinitrophenyl (TNP) or penicillin inhibit immune responses to these haptens in vitro, The inhibition is specific and requires a significant excess of inhibiting red cells over immunogenic red cells. Inhibition is probably due to competition for specific binding sites during the initiation of the response, since the inhibitor must be present at the time of immunization. Specific inhibition with free haptens was not observed.
