Studies on Rat Complement: A Method for Titration of Rat C1, C2, C3, C4, As Well As C5, and the Effect of Rabbit Nephrotoxic Serum on the First Five Components of Complement in Rat Serum

Abstract

A method for the titration of the first five components of complement in rat serum is reported. With the guinea pig assay system, rat C4 could not be detected and the titer of rat C2 was low. By contrast, rat C4 could be specifically measured with EDTA rat C and rat C2 could be more efficiently measured with EDTA rat C. Three hours after the injection of rabbit nephrotoxic serum which was proved to fix complement in vitro, the hemolytic titer of complement in rat serum dropped from 106 to 24 and the titer of C1, C4, C2, C3 and C5 lowered to 1/32, 1/8, 1/5, 1/2 and 1/2 of the original respectively.
