Abstract
NZB mice and their hybrids develop many features resembling human autoimmune disease. Apparent false-positive reactions in a routine cardiolipin-antigen serologic test for syphilis (rapid plasma reagin (18-mm circle) card test) were found in 32.3% of male and 2.0% of female (A/J x NZB)F1 mice, and also in a small percentage of NZB mice and F2 hybrids. Antinuclear factor was also found in the serum of a significant percentage of the animals. The (A/J x NZB)F1 hybrids may be useful as models for the study of the false-positive serologic tests for syphilis which occur in autoimmune disease.
