Canine Immunoglobulins

III. Distribution of Immunoglobulins in Colostrum and Isolation of Secretory IgA and 7S{gamma}1*

Herbert Y. Reynolds and John S. Johnson

From the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation, Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland

Abstract

Canine colostrum was examined for its content of immunoglobulins, in particular IgA and 7S{gamma}1, which were isolated. The IgA immunoglobulin was characterized to a limited extent. 7S{gamma}1 is present in significant amounts in colostrum and is distinctly different from the IgA in colostrum and serum. Whereas 7S{gamma}1 previously was thought to be a separate immunoglobulin class, it now appears to be related to the IgG class through heavy chain determinants and may be an IgG subclass.
