Hereditary Deficiency of the Second Component of Complement in Man: An Immunochemical Study1

Martin R. Klemperer

From the Department of Medicine, Children's Hospital Medical Center, and the Department of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts

Abstract

The sera of four homozygous C'2 deficient individuals and 15 heterozygous C'2 deficient individuals in two kindreds were investigated by immunochemical techniques. The decrease in functional C'2 activity in these sera was found to correlate with a decrease in the amount of a serum beta globulin which is presumably C'2. Individuals homozygous for the C'2 deficiency lack immunochemically measurable serum C'2. Heterozygous C'2 deficient individuals have 30% to 60% of normal C'2.
